Paxil, Celexa, Effexor etc..

Posted in SSRI Weight loss by admin on the July 25th, 2007

I’ve been on Paxil, Celexa and currently Effexor in the last 4 years and have gained 50lbs which could also be due to the countless diets that I have been on includding WW. Very little success, and it’s very discouraging considering exercise has always been apart of my routine. Any suggestions what plans people are doing to help them find success with weight loss, while on SSRIs?

I’m just getting back from a trip to Vancouver BC and am finally able to get to
my emails. I’ve been on Paxil and Celexa, but not Effexor but I too gained 50
lbs on the meds. I had gained about 30 lbs for over 7 years, then I went on a
starvation diet and lost 25 lbs. I gained back the 50 lbs in about 8 months
after that because I had lost so much muscle and was not exercising like I
should. Sue already mentioned some websites to start with which are excellent.
First you have to understand that you have to work harder at this than someone
not on the meds. When you say you exercise what sort of exercise are you doing
that isn’t working for you? We need to know what is it you are doing on a
consistent basis. When you go on these “diets” do you lose any weight at all?
If so, do you stall out at a certain level or do you just go off the diet? When
you aren’t dieting what are you eating? We all know that diets do not work long
term, but you will need to change your lifestyle considerably to lose weight.
I’ve had to relearn how to eat clean and have also had to revamp my exercise
program. Whether you are on meds or off, in order to make permanent changes it
requires a whole new way of thinking. Your body at 50 lbs overweight is not
going to respond as it did before. We can totally help you through this if you
are willing to do whatever it takes to get there. Most people have a threshold
of what they think is all they can handle, and this setpoint is generally what
prevents us from crossing over into success. Also, remember that the meds
create a sense of apathy which is great for controlling anxiety and panic, but
lousy for weight loss. We hope to hear from you soon with some details as to
what your current habits are so we can give you some ideas for change!

Vancouver is a big city, and it’s pretty but I hear Seattle is even better.
Even the people in Vancouver say Seattle is nicer. So…..I’m going to go to
Seattle on the 22nd before we move. Sounds like you had a successful week despi

    Penny,
I did it this time. I pulled a muscle in my left leg above by quad - near my
groin. I have a pretty good bruise on my leg, too, from it. So, I’ve been
icing my leg, trying to stay off of it, trying not stretch. I’m recovering
pretty quickly. Yesterday it really hurt to walk - today I’m moving pretty
good. I think I did it in my kickboxing class stretching - doing splits, then I
rode my horse Saturday and Sunday and then I worked out Monday night. Silly me.

I would go to my doctor, but there is training I really want to be in and I’m
flying out tonight to DC. I’m hoping to be better Saturday to workout - I’ll
    just take it easy.

    So, how are your ribs?

I’m just disappointed that I might not be able to work out this weekend!! Dang.

I will do weights for my upper body and I’ll try some cardio.

When I’m healed, I’ll just to have to warm up on my own - before class.

I’ve never had this happen before, but this is the first time I’ve really tried
to push myself to edge on stretching. I’ve never been super flexible and I’m
starting to see some results from doing it in class. Oh well…

    Thanks for the message.

My leg is ok and I’m back to working out as I normally do. I took it easy last
week and it paid off. I also lost a couple of pounds, too, and I’m trying to
    figure that out.

I’m in Charlotte this week and I’m going to try real hard to stick to schedule.
I can get a membership with the Y in the building for $20 for the week, so I’m
all set there. I just did about two hours of walking around the city, so I got
    today’s work out in.

Sorry to hear about your migranes. I get ocular headaches - right in my left
eye. I take migrane headache medicine (over the counter stuff) and that seems
to help. If it’s real bad, I’ll go to bed with an ice pack over my eyes. Good
luck and I hope you feel better.

and a couple of others I can’t remember and now I am taking Trileptal and
    Klonopin along with the effexor.
