Very desperate

Posted in Weight watchers recipes by admin on the July 25th, 2007

A year ago I started taking Celexa, I started gaining weight. My doctor said to exercise more and go on a diet. I have tried different diets without loosing one pound. I am also working out four to five days a week.I have recently switched to wellbutrin sr because I knew my weight changed when taking celexa. I have not seen any changes in my weight, and my boyfriend left me because I put on 45 and have not been able to loose the weight. He says I am just overeating.I don’t know if takig antidepressants is helping me since I get really depressed when I hear coments about my weight and the fact that I know how hard I work to loose it. I started taking the vitamin E and the omega3 . I sure hope it works. Before I had done any research I was going crazy because no one believed what I was telling them.

So all your beliefs are correct! That is the cause. There is
absolutely no doubt about it! You are equally correct in that you will find
almost absolutely no support from anyone who is not taking these drugs. They
will staunchly try to convince you that you are plainly over eating and that is
all. This will include the closest people in your life. I have found this to
be quite a phenomenon. That being said, I can now tell you you’ve come to the
right place at the right time. I am relatively new to this board, but you will
find it to be extremely supportive. Everyrone here is going through, or has
gone through, the same type of crisis your experiencing.

I have gained the same amount of weight as you have(about 45-50 pounds). As
someone who was thin his whole life, I again find it incredible to think that
anyone could believe that the weight gain was from anything other than the damn
SSRI(in my case Prozac). Anyways, I think you will serve yourself well by not
thinking desperately. It sounds as if you are taking the right steps, but
they will be hard ones. It will take a while for your body to slowly rid itself
of the Celexa, so don’t expect to see any big weight loss in the near future.
You can also expect continued withdrawal effects from the Celexa, which are
quite unpleasant, although it is normal, since your body had become dependent
upon it. I know from first hand experience, and research, that Wellbutrin is
neutral regarding weight. It was the first AD I ever took, and I never gained
    any
weight from it(I still take it now). It was only after the Prozac was added is
when the weight came fast and furiously. Although its a very good drug,
Wellbutrin does not affect serotonin. However, it does successfully affect other
mood-related chemicals in the brain(including dopamine) and it definitely gives
your mood a boost. I guess you’ll have to decide(with the help of your doctor)
if your need for an SSRI outweighs your need to loose weight. That ones a
tough call. I am also stuck in that quandry. As of late, I have been cutting
    down
on the Prozac, with the hope of totally quitting in the near future, since I
finally feel the excess weight is ruining my quality of life too much(I’m sure
you feel the same way). The exercise your doing is great and will play a
major role in your success. I’m hoping the exercise I’m doing will do the same
    for
    me.

After you get back to your regular weight(and I’m sure you will), your
boyfriend will probably want you back. However, you probably won’t want him.
    What
kind of person leaves you as a result of your weight? Suppose you had married
him and you became pregnant. Would he leave you then too, because you started
gaining weight as a result of becoming pregnant? It sounds like its better you
found out now what he’s really made of.

Please let us know how your doing. Remember, we are all in this thing
    together.

    Dear Very Desperate,
I am so sorry to hear about all that you are going through but you are
definitely not alone. I also gained weight while taking the ssri’s. I gained 105
pounds in total. I’m surprised that I am not diabetic at this point.

Your doctor has some nerve telling you to go on a diet and exercise more while
on Celexa…….you are not going to lose the weight while still on an ssri. I
also found that the ssri’s increased my feelings of depression and anxiety, not
to mention the other little goodies it causes………

I have called this drug a mind/body/relationship wrecker many times…….it
really does mess everything up!! I am sorry to hear that your boyfriend left you
because of the 45 pounds………he does sound a little superficial though,
don’t you think………these drugs are no joke………they cause more damage
than you think…….and they can also make you act inappropriately.

You can take Wellbutrin if you like but that will only cause some weight loss at
the beginning and you will then put weight on again……..

Truth is stranger than fiction, it seems to me!!! In the beginning, no one would
believe me either. It’s all a façade!! It’s a great big cover up!!! Yes, to
cover up the fact that these drugs do lots of damage!!

Well, just know that we are all going through the same thing here. We have all
gained a tremendous amount of weight from taking an ssri……..I feel your
pain, believe me!! And I know that you are telling the truth………..

These pdocs are a disgrace to their profession………and these drugs are
poison. More and more our medical professionals/services are driven by the
    pharmaceutical industry………it’s a crying shame…….but that’s how
physicians make their money. So keep that in mind when you are going into a
    doctor’s office.

Also, make sure that you get a very thorough physical………make sure that
there is no physical reasons for depression……….like thyroid disease or
diabetes etc…….. I have just recently found out that I have Hashimoto’s
thyroiditis……..and I was having panic attacks from it……….I’m off of
the medication and I don’t get them anymore………..amazing how the drugs can
actually cause the problems that you were taking them for in the first place.

Join and us and be drug free. It will be the best choice you’ve ever made!!! I
have lost a total of 22-24 pounds and I’m feeling much better!!

If you need any help or information, I am here and Chuck is here also. Chuck is
great when it comes to the nutritional support you need while trying to taper
and then while you are withdrawing!!!
    Hugs,
Nuala ……….hang in there……you can do it!!!
